Earlier this year student, Itay Yarom, participated in the annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship. Itay travelled to Detroit to compete in these STEM and innovation focused multicultural team challenges. We are so proud to have students like Itay who follow their passions and engage in such extraordinary experiences! Upon return Itay has offered to mentor future participants, a statement which speaks volumes about his enthusiasm to contribute and the joy of the competition itself.
“I participated in a FIRST Competition through the Student Robotics Club of South Australia (SRCSA), with the Roboroos East FLL Team. The competition itself is called FIRST Lego League (FLL) and is mainly made up of a robotics section and a project section, completed by teams of up to 10. Each year there is a different theme that the research project has to be based on, and participants have to choose a topic according to the theme and build/design a solution to the discovered problem. The robot section involves a “table” that a (Mindstorms EV3) robot has to be programmed to navigate and accomplish missions/tasks within 2:30 minutes. I really enjoy this competition for many reasons, one of the main ones being the ability to talk to people from all over the world at the World Championships who also had an interest in science and technology. It was an amazing learning experience which allowed me to meet people from across the world and learn new things about space (as the topic this year was Into Orbit).” ~ Itay Yarom
