As a teacher, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is when you hear about an amazing learning experience that a student has been involved with. As a part of the Earth and Cosmos English programme students have been reading and applying literary analysis techniques to a Science Fiction text. One of our students has demonstrated great initiative in regard to her investigation of the book she has read, the Martian. The student in question emailed the author, Andy Weir, with questions about his intended messages and themes in writing the novel and received a number of direct replies outlining his ideas. Taking initiative like this demonstrates that the student is truly a self-directed and pro-active learner and it is these qualities that the learning programme we develop at the ASMS is focussed on developing.
While reading their novels students are also working on an investigation of Exoplanets and will be completing an issues investigation task exploring an aspect of space exploration/colonisation.
