Earlier this term, year 12 English students headed into the city to engage in some preparatory activities for their creative writing task. The day kicked off with a workshop titled Creative Writing Somewhere Inspiring in historic Ayers House with professional storyteller Helen Lawry, followed by a walk through the Botanic Gardens. In both activities, students were challenged to explore their perspectives and richly describe their surroundings using language features. To support students to generate ideas for their own narrative, we headed over to the Art Gallery of South Australia and considered how we might use art pieces as prompts for elements in our narratives. Finally, to wrap up the day and explore a wider range of features used to engage audiences, students were lucky enough to have the opportunity to see Aladdin the Musical – for free!
