To celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 of March, a group of 9 students and 4 teachers attended the International Women’s Day Breakfast at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Friday March 4. The morning kicked off with an early 6:30am start and included guest speakers and a hot breakfast.

The breakfast was hosted by Senator Penny Wong. One of our students, Lucy, was inspired by Penny Wong’s speech. “The International Women’s Day Breakfast was an extraordinary event that I feel privileged to have experienced. Penny Wong’s speech on the issues surrounding women’s rights was extremely powerful, particularly when surrounded by thousands of other awe-inspired individuals.”

The main guest speaker Fran Kelly is a respected radio presenter, current affairs journalist and political correspondent who gave an empowering speech on the true meaning of feminism and working together to inspire each other and work towards equality.

The focus statement of the 2016 IWD breakfast was ‘change her future’ which was a topic aimed towards educating people on domestic violence around the world.

ASMS teacher Kay Gillett says that it’s important for students to attend events like this, to remain informed about the world they live and be inspired. “They can see women, from all walks of life, that can come together for a single cause that impacts us all’.
