Frequently Asked Questions

When is the ASMS open?
The resources of the school are available for study purposes to students from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.  We occasionally vary these arrangements for special occasions like Activities Day, special meetings or the end of term but inform you of these changes.  Staff members are not available to students during the time set aside to meet our professional development responsibilities on Tuesday afternoons.

Why are students expected to wear an ID badge?
We are not a “uniform” school.  However, we do have to meet OHS&W requirements and parents and caregivers have expectations that we do our best to provide a secure and safe environment.  The wearing of badges is one strategy of helping to achieve this and it has the added benefit of making it easier for us to communicate with each other and develop informed relationships.  ID badges allow Flinders University and associated staff (e.g. at the Decafe) to recognise our students and it is an absolute requirement that students wear them when attending other schools for alliance subjects.

Is there homework at the ASMS?
Yes! Formal timetabled sessions for Year 10 and 11 students (central studies, university studies and tutor group) at the ASMS take up 1600 minutes per week (this is in line with a formal DECS requirement).  With variations to routine, special events and so on, this certainly averages out to less than 25 hours per week.  This is not enough time to adequately meet learning requirements and goals and students should plan for extra study either at home or during the extended access available at the school.

A full timetable load for Year 12 students of five subjects totals 1325 minutes per week with time and space provided for study sessions at school.  All Year 12 students should negotiate a personal timetable with families and tutors with signatures from all three. The time needed for “homework” varies and students and families should discuss this with their tutors and teachers.
