The Australian Science and Mathematics School (ASMS) opened in 2003. Through its partnership with Flinders University, the ASMS is responsible for leadership of reform of science and mathematics education across South Australia. The school, located on the campus of Flinders University, operates in an innovative building that has been recognised internationally as a model for school design for the 21st century.
In 2003, the school had an initial enrolment of 165 students in years 10 and 11.
In 2004 and 2005 the school also offered a full range of programs to students in year 12 and its enrolment grew to 260 students, coming from all areas of SA and from a diversity of cultural and educational backgrounds.
By 2006, enrolments included students from the local area, from suburbs as far south as Strathalbyn and north to Gawler, as well as a cohort of overseas students.
Short term study groups have included students from Korea, Thailand, Canada and Japan as well as several longer term international exchange students.
