Interdisciplinary Curriculum

The interdisciplinary curriculum at the ASMS will ensure that students at the school develop a sound knowledge and understanding of science in the traditional disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and geology as well as deep insights into the rapidly emerging understandings of the new sciences.

As knowledge increases it is apparent that knowledge is not confined to any one discipline, but reaches across a range of disciplines.  Many of the new sciences are derived from emerging understandings and technological developments that sit across and between the disciplines.

Students in their 10th and 11th years of schooling are engaged in a two year pattern of experiences. These interdisciplinary, Central Studies facilitate deep engagement with essential scientific and mathematical knowledge, skills and attitudes across key science disciplines and connect with projects of major significance that may involve university and workplace studies.  The Central Studies have been shaped around important and authentic, leading edge science and technology.

The ASMS interdisciplinary curriculum is organised into the following Central Studies

  • Mathematics and Abstract Thinking
  • Sustainable Futures
  • The Body in Question
  • A Technological World
  • Communication Systems
  • Towards Nanotechnology
  • Variety of Life
  • Biotechnology
  • Earth and Cosmos
