School Operations

The Australian Science and Mathematics School caters for the three final years of schooling before entry into higher education. The purpose-built school is designed for highly collaborative interactive and personalised learning.

Student wellbeing is supported through a highly developed tutor group program, student counsellor and a student pastoral care worker. Extra curricular activities include a lunch time sport program and after school sport program. An Old Scholars Association commenced in 2007.

Parent involvement includes Meet the Tutor Evenings, Learning Conversations and social activities supported by the Governing Council.

Year Levels
The ASMS is a Year 10 to 12 senior high school.  All Year 10 and 11 students work together in the central studies and Year 10 students can gain SACE stage one credits if they choose to do so.  Year 12 subjects follow the defined SSABSA curriculum statements and all of the criteria for achieving the SACE and gaining a TER can be met at the school.

School Times
Lessons commence at 8.40am and normally conclude at 3.20pm. The school is generally open from 7.45am on weekdays and remains open until 5.00pm for students to continue their research and learning. The adjacent Sturt Library annexe of the Flinders University is generally open from 8.30am to 9.00pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 6.00pm on Fridays. Australian Science and Mathematics School students enjoy full access to this facility.

If students are absent from school for any reason a parent or guardian is required to call the school on 8201 5704 before 9:30am. A note should be supplied to tutors following all absences.

Dress
Although there is no ASMS uniform, dress must always be neat and appropriate and not offensive to others.  Guidelines have been agreed by consultation with the student body and are distributed to new students.
Students are issued with an identification badge, which they are expected to wear at all times.

School Canteen
Students have access to the cafeteria on the adjacent Sturt Campus of the Flinders University and the ASMS has kitchen facilities (microwave, small fridge, hot water and sink) for student use in the student café area.

Sport
A variety of sports are on offer for all students at the ASMS. There is an extensive lunch time sports program and teams are entered in the southern zone interschool competition (usually after school hours). Students also currently have access to a wide range of clubs and sports through honourary membership of the Flinders University Sports Association. Options can be explored at http://www.flinders.edu.au/sports/

Clubs and Committees
A variety of clubs and committees are available such as the Student Voice and Service Club, as well as those offered at Flinders University.  Others may be established on demand.
